West Somerset July 2014. Situated at the highest point of the Blackdown Hills and overlooking the town of Wellington is the Wellington Monument, to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington and the victory at the Battle of Waterloo. The 175ft (53.3m) tower was started in 1817 and completed in 1854, on land that was bought with money donated by the government in celebration of his achievements. Now in the care of the National Trust, it has an internal staircase leading to a viewing platform, but has been closed to the public since 2007.
