The "Empire Stops Here": The synagoge The Jewish synagogue is located to the right side of the main gate. The presence of a Jewish community is not in itself unusual, particularly in a cosmopolitan trading post such as Dura, but what is extraordinary is he series of beautifully crafted figurative paintings discovered there, dating from around 240, just a decade before the city’s destruction. Judaism would later have an aversion – just as did Islam – to depicting the human form, and so this fresco cycle is highly unusual, perhaps evidence of an accommodation with Hellenistic ideas, perhaps just a sign of the Durans’ self-confident individualism.
