Iran Qom _DSC7574 — youngrobv

First photo uploaded from our visit to the impressive Hazrat-e Masumeh in Qom. Shown here is the landmark golden dome over the Shrine of Fatima al-Masumeh, sister of Imam Reza, the seventh descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, and the eighth Shia Imam. Fatima al Masumeh was buried here in the ninth century, although the shrine as we know it today was built some 800 years later by Shah Abbas I. The sprawling Masumeh complex surrounding the shrine is the core of the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979 and is still being expanded today. The site is one for the holiest, if not the holiest place in Iran. Not surprisingly, access is restricted, but no matter what the travel books explain, access is not limited to Muslims only. Provided you make arrangements in advance, a guide from the educational section can meet visitors and take them on a tour of the site, as well as taking the time to explain everything you want to know about Islam, the differences between Shia and Sunni or even Sufi beliefs. This tour can't be recommended highly enough, if not at least to get a different point of view compared to that presented by the media. This view is visible from the street, or the dry river bed outside, however the mirrored Iwan is only visible from inside the complex. I only wish we could have stayed until sunset, as this dome is lit up beautifully at night! * #100 on Flickr's Explore. * 'Rhythm of Heaven' has a wonderful essay about the shrine illustrated with this photo. * This photo appears at Harvard's Belfer Centre site unlinked and without permission * This photo also appears Worldflicks more photos to from Qom to come...
